Will Facebook Cause the Downfall of Western Civilization? (Part 1)

I can see it now – the year, 2050. The US and the rest of the western world is far behind China, India, and other former 3rd world countries. Not only have we lost our lead in the space race, but we don’t even have astronauts. We have very few leading scientists and are the laughing stock of the rest of the world.

The reason? In short, Facebook addiction has led to the decline of our society. Businessmen and entrepreneurs have lost their zeal for conducting business deals and spend their days reminiscing with their former 3rd grade classmates. Fortune 500 companies have had no choice but to give into rampant Facebook usage during working hours, and our scientists are too busy super-poking people and commenting on old school photos to have time to make any discoveries or achieve advances in their fields.

It took a few years, but by 2010 the entirety of North and South America, Great Britain, and Australia had 90% of their adult populations on Facebook. At first it was mostly people in their 20’s and 30’s, but the baby boomers quickly joined in and even many seniors could not resist its addictive forces. Facebook became a staple of the west’s daily online diet since 2010, and we have since organized our lives around it.

Every major political candidate has campaigned heavily on Facebook since 2012, with the election of 2020 actually taking place on the site, as its enormous server infrastructure proved more reliable than any former voting system.

Traditional e-mail from the early 2000’s was quickly replaced with Facebook’s messaging system, as most people found it superfluous to have both. Children from kindergarten through university now attend virtual school via Facebook, and their class pictures are automatically uploaded each year, doing away with the previous need to scan class pictures. In fact, most dating and weddings take place on Facebook.

Is this what our future looks like? Is there anything we can do to stop it? Find out in Part 2, coming soon.
